City to Sea: Coney Island Exhibition

City to Sea is an ongoing public art initiative that explores the relationship between beach resorts and cities. City to Sea was developed at London's Goldsmiths University, and has partnered with Magnum Photos. The City to Sea: Coney Island project is a collaboration between City to Sea artists and local residents of Coney Island.

Coney Island is world-famous for its amusement park and beaches, which thousands of tourists visit every year. However, few of them venture more than a few blocks into the mostly low-income neighborhood that extends beyond the attractions.

The goal of the project was to connect artists from outside the community to local residents through photography workshops and encourage them to share their stories and experiences via photography and other media.

The exhibition explores narratives of Coney Island, from amusement parks and beaches to the ongoing recovery from Hurricane Sandy, which devastated the neighborhood in 2012 and the effects of which are still felt by residents today.

Images of the 2018 City to Sea: Coney Island exhibition at the Walls Ortiz gallery in Harlem, NY are available here here.
