City to Sea: Visualising Climate Crisis

David Kendall collaborates with Visual Studies Journal and Open Eye Gallery at the LOOK Climate Lab 2022, Liverpool, UK.

In 2021 and 2022 David Kendall experimented with thermal photography and moving image: To research how digital image formations occur and reveal visible and invisible elements of atmospheric air pollution. The artworks, entitled 'Other Lines' focus on emissions produced by industrial landscapes (including, oil and petrochemical manufacturing sites, installations and plants) in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, United Kingdom. In addition, digital photo stories are in development with Cheshire 'A' level students whose goal was to discover and experiment with imaginative photographic techniques, visually surveying air emissions in their neighbourhoods. As a result, recording more visible and invisible elements of atmospheric pollution along the Wirral Peninsula.

The project will be published in a special edition of Visual Studies, Fall/Autumn 2022.

City to Sea: What's Next 2020 - 2022

Since 2010 The City to Sea project has brought together artists, photographers and urbanists to curate artistic, sociological and scientific research. Our aim is to organize public art projects-interventions, symposiums, exhibitions and educational workshops. Generating collaborative projects that explore how tourism, migration, urban ecology and biodiversity interlink with arts and cultural practice. In 2021 we are working through the COVID-19 pandemic, looking forward to the easing of travel restrictions in the USA and Europe and moving forward in 2022. Take care – Rebecca Locke and David Kendall

City to Sea: Coney Island 2018 - 2019

Since 2015, we have been working with our friends at Coney Island Gospel Assembly to make photo-stories exploring Coney Island, including the recovery from Hurricane Sandy. During the Fall/Autumn there was a series of events including talks and an exhibition at the Walls-Ortiz Gallery, Harlem, NYC. Thanks to all who came to the talks and exhibition, which we hope to reshow in Brooklyn in 2019.

We continue to receive positive messages about the show, which was among AM-New York’s ‘Best art exhibits to see at NYC museums in the colder months’ and ‘Do NYC’ November Top Picks. We are grateful to the City Seminary, Nyack College, Arts Initiative Columbia University, Urban Photographers Association, Goldsmiths, University of London, Openvizor and Rhizome New York for promoting the show online.
